The library will be hosting a booksigning by local author Frank Griffin. The book Touched by Fire signing will be March 27, 2010 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. In 1954 Johnnie Frank Griffin witnessed the violent death of Attorney General-elect Albert Patterson, of Alabama. Six months later he told a grand jury what he knew. The next day he was stabbed. Though his wounds seemed slight, that night he died ina hospital built from the profits of crime. Nine years later, less than an hour after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Johnnie Frank's son, Frank Griffin, saw Lee Harvey Oswald fleeing the scene of the murder of a Dallas police officer. Between these two events Frank grew up in one of the strangest decades in American history. His story touches that of one of the era's best know governors, John Patterson of Alabama. Swine Flu Information

To provide our patrons with the most up to date information about the swine flu we are creating this blog with links and information by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

According to the CDC the human swine flu outbreak continues to grow in the United States and internationally. Today, CDC reports additional cases of confirmed swine influenza and a number of hospitalizations of swine flu patients. Internationally, the situation is more serious too, with additional countries reporting confirmed cases of swine flu. In response to the intensifying outbreak, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 4 A Phase 4 alert is characterized by confirmed person-to-person spread of a new influenza virus able to cause "community-level" outbreaks." The increase in the pandemic alert phase indicates that the likelihood of a pandemic has increased.

CDC has activated its emergency operations center to coordinate the agency's emergency response. CDC's goals are to reduce transmission and illness severity, and provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by this swine influenza virus. Yesterday, CDC issued a travel warning recommending that people avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. CDC continues to issue interim guidance daily on the website and through health alert network notices. CDC's Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is releasing one-quarter of its antiviral drugs, personal protective equipment, and respiratory protection devices to help states respond to the outbreak. The swine influenza A (HIN1) virus is susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir. This is a rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide updated guidance and new information as it becomes available.

Filing Your Taxes Online

Tax time is upon us, and our Library has their computers ready for those who wish to file their returns online, which is being encouraged by the Internal Revenue Service. Computer User Cards are available free of charge at the front desk. Remember -- while the cards are free, all outstanding fines and fees must be current on your existing library account before you will be given access to the computers.

No matter how you may feel about the IRS, it is Tax Season already. Here is some tips to help you file your taxes. AARP is here every Wednesday from 10am - 2pm until April 15th. They will fill out your taxes for free and offer to e-file or print your return for mailing. E-File is free as well, currently they have a sign up sheet at the front door prior to 10am the cutoff is 25 people so get here early. If you want to file your own taxes the IRS website offer various services to help you file your taxes for free. Please visit for a list of available services. Need forms???? Did you know that many forms can simply be printed using your computer. Again visit the IRS website find the form you need and click on PRINT.

This is your Children's Librarian, Miss Kayla, writing to let everyone know that this past week was my last to be your Children's Librarian. I've had a terrific summer with you all and I am going to miss seeing everyone's happy faces here at the library.

My thanks to everyone who came out and made our Summer Reading Program a success! You guys are the best! I would also like to send out a huge thanks to the Brights who have recently finished painting our Young Adult section. Next time you are in stop by and see what a wonderful job they did!

Summer Reading Information for July

June is coming to an end, but our Summer Reading Program is still going strong!

Between Friday, July 4th and Sunday, July 6th the library will be closed in observance of Independence Day. We hope you have a fantastic holiday! But, don't forget to come back and visit us on the 7th! We will be back open during our normal operating hours. Doors open at 10:00 a.m.!

Continuing throughout the month of July, Story Time and Wii game nights will still be on Tuesdays evenings.

Summer Reading Program 2008

Hello Everyone!

This is my first blog as your Children's Librarian and I'm so excited to be part of your summers this year!

Just a heads up for those who weren't aware... storytime has a new day and time.

I'll be ready to read for you guys every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., providing there are people to read to! (Otherwise, I will have to read to the walls, and that can be embarrassing.)

As most of you who haved stopped by know, we have several different organizations coming out to join us for our Summer Reading Program (aka SRP) this year. We've already had:

Martha's Petting Zoo

Carlos' Rock Wall,

Casey (the guitar teacher from Dan's Music Shop here in town)

and our very own first annual Iron-Man Chef Cleveland competition!

All our thanks to these guys we've had a lot of fun with you all!

Over the next few weeks (for those who haven't yet picked up a calender and signed up) we are going to have many more really fantastic people joining us! (All acts are set to begin at 1:00p.m. with the exception of Jungle Jim the Bug Guy. *Details about that act later.*)

~On June 19th Raymond Eastman Jr. will be bringing Puppet Wise with him again this year!

~On June 20th Jungle Jim will be bringing his Bugs from Around the World to share with us! (Jungle Jim won't be here until 4:45 p.m. because he has to drive such a long way to be with us!)

~On June 26th we will be having our Dominos Pizza Party and Demonstration.... my tummy is already rumbling.

~For our last visitors this month, we are going to have Mr. Kevin Ladd, a genealogist from a neighboring library and Professor Bytheway from the Sam Houston State University here to tell us about family history and Crime Scene Investigation!

A new thing we are excited to tell all of our patrons and readers about out there is our new Wii Game Night! This is a supervised event and all ages are welcome! (Parents are definitely encouraged to loose some of those inhibitions and come out and join in the fun!)

I hope you all are having a truly fantastic summer, no matter what you are doing! I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot of things. Once I remember them all, I will definitely make more posts!

Mary Merrell chosen as 1 of 29 librarians in Texas for Grant

Mary Merrell was 1 out of 29 librarians choosen for the PELSC Cohort Program. The PELSC Cohort Program is an all expense paid tuition to Texas Woman's Univeristy in Denton. Don't worry I'm not going anywhere. The classes are online so I can stay here in Cleveland. Upon completion I will have a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science. I am very excited about being chosen as well as being honored. I feel this is not only an excellent opportunity for me personally but for the city as well.

Just thought I 'd spread the word since you've seen the demolition of the library-- there is talk of a teen center. That means.. there will actually be a place in Cleveland where the teens can hang out. Finally, a place to meet friends, a place to sit back and read the newly arrived books or the oldest books-- a hang out for some and a comfy zone for others. The visit is free.
If you're a teen with ideas on how you 'd like your place to be then visit the library and tell us about it. I'm Dyan and here from 2-6 p.m. I'd enjoy hearing what the teens in this community would like... something tells me computers, telephones, music downloads, video games, t.v., something refreshing or relaxing to drink and munch on and friends. A place where you can have cram group sessions for the exams and find the latest events, news, and books you need for school, but also that book that you just are going to relax to one weekend or weekday. a place away from all for just a day.

The library would love to have a friends of the library. This group would provide input and help raise funds with either grants or fund raisers that would support the library. Bobcat Turned Loose at Library

Public Works Department turned a Bobcat loose at the library. Minor injuries were sustained but no serious injuries reported. Walls came tumbling down and a few donuts were tried using the Bobcat. Dust as you can see was everywhere. Renovations are just starting this week and will last approximately 4-6 months.

Teens @ the library

Steven Boone visited the library. Steven's a Cleveland High School student. He entered a video tech class @ school & is enjoying it. He used to work with a production company. He likes to work on computers and can do anything with a computer. His grandfather, Edwin, was Norweigan and was one of the first people to work on the government mainframes. His grandfather is also a published author. Steven says his interests in books are those books that teach foreign languages especially German and Russian. He also suggested that the library offer books in foreign languages since there are quite a few German students at his school and a new international student. Quite an intelligent!
Kristen Freeman is a student @ Cleveland Junior High. She is very creative. She enjoys her language arts class and theater arts class. Kristen has graciously offered to help with the Summer Reading Program. We spoke about the skits and different programs we are lining up for the young children and the teenagers this summer. Kristen had many fantastic ideas during our brainstorming session. She is going to be collaborating on writing a skit. She enjoys the author Lowry. She is an avid reader and a loyal library patron.
Brianna who attends Cleveland Junior High is on the quiet side. However, don't let that fool you.. she has ideas spinning and spiraling. She is logical and quiet and nods for the approving o.k.
She will be one of the main characters in the skit for the Summer Reading Program in 2007.

Kevin J. Anderson's Of Fire and Night, Book 5 of The Saga of the Seven Suns is available abridged on CD, read by David Colacci.

Also available is the latest selection by Kathy Reichs, whose life is the inspiration for the Fox TV Series Bones. Break No Bones is the authors latest novel featuring Temperance Brennan, read by Dorothee Berryman.

Dragon's Fire, the newest Pern novel by mother and son team Anne and Todd McCaffrey, is read by Dick Hill. This selection is also abridged.

Library Renovation

Yeah!!! The library finally starts the long awaited renovation. Starting the week of August 21, 2006 the library will be noisy. Please bear with us during the renovations we are trying to maintain operations as normal. The public toilets will be off limits during the first week due to walls coming down.

Adult Fiction Alert

Every month we will be alerting you, our patrons, to new titles we have on the shelf. This is the first of these covering Adult Fiction!

If you enjoy medical thrillers you will probably want to check out Crisis by Robin Cook, considered to be a master of the genre.

In the realm of the legal thriller is Judge & Jury from James Patterson. This one isn't in the popluar Alex Delaware series but is sure to please Patterson fans.

Phantom, by Terry Goodkind, is the twelfth book in the popluar fantasy series The Sword of Truth.

Also in fantasy is the second collaboration by mother and son team Anne and Todd McCaffery, Dragon's Fire. This one is the sequel to Dragon's Kin, and is a continuation of the popular Pern series.

Eating & Drinking @ the Library

The library would like feedback on the possibilities of eating and drinking in the library. The library would like to be a destination and a place to come. When the staff takes a book home we read while eating and drinking. So why is this not allowed in public libraries? Let us know what you think?

Immigrant Students & College

If you are an immigrant student, or know someone who is, you can go to college regardless of your immigration status. June 17, 2001 HB 1403 was signed into law. Effective beginning in Fall 2001 this law enable immigrant students, including undocumented, to qualify as residents and receive in-state tuition. To qualify a student must meet the following four provisions:

Have graduated from public or private high school or received a GED in TX
Have resided in TX for at least 3 years, lived some of this time with a parent or legal guardian, before the person graduated from high school or received the (GED)
Register in an institution of higher education not earlier than the Fall 2001 semester. If you have attended college before this date you DO NOT qualify.
Provide the institution an affidavit stating that he/she will file an application to become a permanent resident as soon as he/she is eligible to do so.

Immigrant student who do not meet the 3 year requirement but who have started a process with the INS and have filed an I-130 or I-140 are also eligible to receive in-state tuition i fthey have been here for at least 12 months.

People holding work visas (H1-B) and their dependents (H-4) can now also receive in-state tuition at state universities. The same rule applies for NACARA and TPS applicants among others.

Students who are classified as residents under the new law, also qualify for state financial aid (Texas Grant and Texas Public Education Grant). To apply they need to fill out the FAFSA even if they do not have a social security number. They can also use the 9 digit number generated by the institution they are attending.
